Should You Affiliate? An Honest ROI Analysis of Hyrox Training Club Membership

Around $130 a month buys you programming, coach education, the right to use the name, and a listing on the official finder. Here is what it actually gets you, what it does not, and the three cases where the answer is no.

There are now more than 5,000 Hyrox-affiliated gyms worldwide, up from roughly 2,000 in mid-2023. Somewhere in that growth curve, affiliation stopped being a differentiator and became table stakes in some markets and an unnecessary expense in others.

Which one it is for you depends on things nobody else can assess. This article gives you the actual inputs.

What you are buying

Hyrox runs two affiliation tiers. The vast majority of gyms join as Training Clubs.

Training Club

Cost: roughly $130 a month, or about $1,500 a year, paid monthly or annually. Regional pricing varies, so confirm current rates for your market before you budget. The term is twelve months and it auto-renews unless you cancel at least 60 days before the end of the term. Put that cancellation date in your calendar the day you sign up, whether or not you intend to use it.

Equipment requirement: none. This is deliberate and it is the most important fact in this article. Hyrox is mostly running, bodyweight movements, and equipment that any functional gym already owns. A CrossFit box, a boutique studio, a PT studio, or a bootcamp can affiliate without buying anything.

What you get:

Premium Partner

Requirement: roughly 1,938 square feet of dedicated Hyrox floor space, official CENTR and Concept2 equipment, built to replicate race conditions.

What it adds: geographic area exclusivity.

Who it is for: gyms with the space, the capital, and a strategic reason to lock out competitors in a defined area. For most independent operators this is a significantly larger commitment than the business case supports at the outset. Start as a Training Club, prove the demand, then consider it.

The four things affiliation actually buys you

Strip away the feature list and there are four real assets.

1. Permission to say the word

This is the big one and it is easy to underestimate.

Without affiliation, you can train people for Hyrox. You cannot brand around it. You cannot put Hyrox in your gym name, you cannot use the logo, you cannot title your class “Hyrox Prep” in a way that implies official status, and you cannot lean on the brand in your advertising.

What you can do unaffiliated is describe the format factually. “Race-style conditioning: 8x1km runs with functional stations” is accurate and legal. It is also considerably less effective, because the athlete is searching for a specific word and you are not allowed to use it prominently.

Given that the local keywords are all built around that word, this matters more than it sounds.

2. The finder listing

The official Training Club finder is a high-authority referral source and a meaningful share of committed athletes start their gym search there rather than on Google. It is also a backlink from a domain with serious authority, which helps the local search position you are trying to build.

Point the listing at your dedicated Hyrox page rather than your homepage. Most gyms do not, which wastes half the value.

3. Programming you do not have to write

The honest assessment: the programming is solid and it saves a coach real hours, but it is not a moat. A competent coach can program for Hyrox without it. Eight kilometers of running and eight known stations is not a mysterious problem.

Value it as time savings, not as competitive advantage. If your head coach would spend six hours a month writing Hyrox programming at an effective cost of $300, the affiliation covers itself on that line alone. If you have a coach who enjoys programming and has capacity, this line is worth less.

4. Credibility with athletes who already know the sport

The serious athlete asks whether you are affiliated. It is a quick filter and it is used. For the beginner segment it means nothing.

The ROI cases people cite, examined

Two figures circulate widely and both deserve context.

The Netherlands gym: $12,500 a month in Hyrox revenue against a $150 annual affiliation cost, described as an 83x return.

The ratio is real and the framing is misleading. The affiliation fee is not what produced $12,500 a month. Coaches, class time, marketing, and an owner who built a program produced it. Affiliation was a small enabling cost, not the driver. Treat the ratio as evidence that the fee is not the binding constraint, not as evidence that paying the fee generates revenue.

The North American gym: $100,000 a year added, on two Hyrox classes a week, against a $1,500 annual affiliation.

More useful, and more replicable, because it names the operational input. Two classes a week is a real and small commitment. The number is achievable. But note what is absent from that description: the marketing, the on-ramp, the event calendar, and the retention work that turned two weekly classes into six figures.

The pattern in both cases is the same and it is the thing to actually take away: the affiliation fee is a rounding error in either direction. At $130 a month it is roughly the cost of one drop-in customer a week. It will not sink you if it fails and it will not save you if everything else is wrong.

Which means the affiliation decision is not primarily a financial decision. It is a positioning decision.

The three cases where the answer is no

Case 1: You have not validated demand

If you have never run a Hyrox class, never asked your members, and have no idea whether anyone in your market cares, do not sign a twelve-month auto-renewing contract to find out.

Run a simulation event first. It costs you a Saturday, it makes money, and it tells you exactly how much demand exists. If 60 people show up, affiliate on Monday. If 12 show up and 9 of them are your existing members, you have learned something more valuable than a Training Club listing.

Note the sequencing problem: you cannot advertise a Hyrox-branded event unaffiliated. Run it as a “fitness race simulation” with the format described factually. It works, plenty of gyms do it, and it is a legitimate way to test the water.

Case 2: You are the fifth affiliated gym within ten minutes

Affiliation is not a differentiator in a saturated market. It is an entry ticket to a crowded room.

If four gyms near you are already affiliated and one has been running race prep for three years, affiliating makes you the fifth option with the same badge. You will need a wedge regardless: the beginners’ gym, the Doubles specialists, the masters program, the one with genuine run coaching.

In that market, spend the first $1,500 on the wedge. Affiliate after you have one.

Case 3: Your operations cannot absorb another product line

This is the failure mode nobody admits to.

Affiliation is easy. Running a Hyrox program is not. It needs a landing page, an on-ramp, a coach who owns it, an event calendar, a dated block with enrollment windows, follow-up on leads, and a retention plan for after race day.

If you are already running three under-attended programs and your front desk takes two days to return a call, adding Hyrox will produce a fourth under-attended program and a monthly charge. The constraint is not the fee. It is attention.

Fix the response time first. It is free and it improves everything you already sell.

The case for affiliating early

Against all of that, one argument in favor that gets stronger every month.

Hyrox is heading toward two million annual participants across 107 race weekends. Affiliated gyms went from 2,000 to over 5,000 in about eighteen months. The local search terms are still sitting at keyword difficulties in the single digits and low twenties. In most American cities the position is genuinely open.

Every one of those facts is a snapshot of a market that has not caught up to its own growth. The gyms that will own Hyrox in their city in 2029 are the ones that took the position while the position was cheap.

If you have demand signal, capacity, and an open market, $130 a month to be first in your area is not a difficult decision.

The decision, in one paragraph

Affiliate if you have validated demand, an open or lightly contested local market, and the operational capacity to run a real program rather than a class. Do not affiliate if you are testing a hypothesis, entering a saturated market without a wedge, or already stretched thin. In all cases, remember that the fee is small enough that it is not the variable that determines whether this works. The variable is whether you build the capture system around it.

Next: the problem that ruins otherwise well-run Hyrox programs. The post-race cliff and how to solve it before race day rather than after.

Common questions

How much does Hyrox gym affiliation cost?

Hyrox does not publish Training Club pricing on its affiliation page, and rates vary by region. Third-party reporting puts it around 130 US dollars a month or roughly 1,500 a year. Confirm the current figure for your market directly before budgeting. The term is twelve months and it auto-renews unless cancelled at least 60 days before the end of the term, so diary that cancellation date on the day you sign.

What equipment is required to become a Hyrox Training Club?

None. The Training Club tier has no minimum equipment requirement, because the sport is mostly running, bodyweight movements and gear that CrossFit boxes, functional gyms, boutique studios and bootcamps already own. The Premium Partner tier is a different proposition, requiring roughly 1,938 square feet of dedicated Hyrox floor space plus official CENTR and Concept2 equipment.

What is the difference between a Training Club and a Premium Partner?

Training Club is the accessible tier that most gyms join: no equipment minimum, access to the programming library and Performance Hub, free Foundation Level coach education, the right to use the name and imagery in marketing, and a listing on the official gym finder. Premium Partner adds geographic area exclusivity but requires the dedicated floor space and official equipment build-out.

Can I train clients for Hyrox without affiliating?

Yes. Coaching people for the race is unrestricted. What you cannot do is brand around it: no Hyrox in your gym name, no logo, no leaning on the brand in advertising, and no gym finder listing. You can describe the format factually and many gyms do, which is a reasonable way to validate demand before signing a twelve-month agreement.
